Ken Rome 5K Walk/Run

This Walk/Run is a tribute to Ken Rome. Ken dedicated his career to insuring that the newest and most effective heart therapies were made available to all who needed them through his long career with the cardiac pacing industry and Boston Scientific. Ken died on March 2, 2008 of sudden cardiac death caused by vulnerable plaque rupture, the so called "Silent Killer". We are devastated that this could happen to a man who was extremely conscientious and dedicated to his physical health and well being. What better way to celebrate the passionately lived life of this extraordinary husband, father, grandfather and friend than with a walk/run in Ken's footsteps. The Ken Rome 5K walk/run with family and friends is the perfect tribute to a man who embraced exercise as one of the priorities in his life.

While meeting with Dr. Rob Schwartz of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation we learned of his research on vulnerable plaque. There are virtually no symptoms and no tests for this often fatal condition. We have set up a research fund in Ken's name. "The Ken Rome Research Fund'. at the Minneapolis Heart Institute is designed to study athletes and the effect of extreme exercise on the cardiovascular system.

This project has given us a purpose. We feel we are giving Ken the perfect gift. If this research helps even one family from having to go through this ordeal, our prayers will have been answered.

Thank you for being a part of this event and for your contributions.

The Ken Rome Research Fund/ Marathon Study

The Ken Rome Research Fund in support of the Marathon Study at the Minneapolis Heart Institute seeks to understand the relationship between coronary artery plaque formation and risk factors. These factors include family history, cholesterol and lipid levels, and amount of exercise. The study, using the newest technology, is being conducted by Principal Investigator Robert Schwartz, MD, FACC, and his colleagues. The goal of the Research Fund will hopefully allow a better understanding of these athletes' risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac death.

The expansion of the study will also help ensure that the results can be used to benefit all potential victims of this silent killer, not just athletes. We thank Boston Scientific Corporation for its support of cardiovascular research and this event.
